WHY DID A JAPANESE HOUSEWIFE BECOME A PI?

I blame my husband. Everything started because of him.

すべての始まりは私の旦那様が原因でした。

So, I have to talk about my husband first.

最初に私のパートナーである主人の事をお話しします。

He was in the military, then after leaving, he was working overseas doing investigations related to what he learned in the military.

彼はアメリカの軍隊に務めておりました。戦地にも2回ほど行きました。退役した後、軍隊で学んだ知識と技術を使い海外で調査のような仕事をしておりました。

Just before Covid time, he came home to stay. One of his former associates told him he could do similar work that he did overseas here in the US and still get paid. So my husband made a small Private Investigation firm and decided I needed to work with him.

コロナが始まる直前帰国し、そのままアメリカに留まる事になり、どうしたものかと考えている時、昔の知り合いから、彼の海外でやっていた仕事はアメリカで私立探偵という仕事で生業が立つと知り、個人の私立探偵事務所を立ち上げました。

そして、私も何故か一緒に働くことになってしまったのです。

He knew that a couple in a car did not draw suspicion like a middle aged single man does. Also a couple draws less attention and can go more places than a single guy. So a couple is actually better in many situations for being undetected in outside "field work"*

主人は自分が調査中に中年男一人でうろうろするのは目立つと考えており、カップルだと目立ちにくく、動きやすいとわかっていたのです。色々な状況でのフィールドウオークにはカップルで行動するほうが適してるということでした。

At first, we were planning on me just following with him on his work. However, we discovered two additional "secret weapons" that made it so I started working some cases on my own.

最初は彼に仕事にお供するということでした。

しかし、仕事をし始めてみると後に'秘密武器'と呼ばれるようになった、私ならではの特権を発見して、それから私一人で仕事もするようになったのです。

The first was that Asian Grandmothers are just as "invisible" to many Americans as a couple was. I sometimes could walk right up and talk to a person of interest and they so far never suspected anything. If I wanted to stand in a park and do exercises while watching someone, no one thought it was strange and look at me.

一つ目はアジア人のおばあちゃんはどこにいってもアメリカンから疑われない。存在が無！！の状態。アメリカに住んでいるアジア人はどこでも歩いている、運動してる（公園や広場で太極拳とか。。）近くでうろうろしててもなんか気にも留められないんです。

時によっては、直接調査対象の人に話しかけちゃっても、全然疑われないんです！！

The second is that I have what my husband calls the "Shiba Stare". I love just staring through binoculars or a camera at a door or other car. I can stare for hours just like my daughters Shiba staring out the window waiting for a squirrel to eat.

２つ目は私の柴犬の凝視（っと主人が呼んでいるんですが）

人によっては何時間も一か所を見ているっていうのはつらいものなんです。ほんとにちょっとした気の緩みで調査対象を見逃してしまったり、いいカメラタイミングを逃したりするらしんです。

私はなにも考えずに一か所を凝視することに苦痛を感じず、

長時間見ていられるんです。それが結構楽しんです。（笑）すごくいいタイミングで写真取れたり、ビデオが撮れたりするとわくわくするんです。

So that is how I went from being an accessory for my husbands business to a fully licensed investigator.

こんな感じで、主人の隠れ蓑の役割として、彼のアクセサリーだった私が、本格的にライセンスを取って私立探偵のなりました。

*Field Work: Doing things like surveillance in a car watching a business or house. Sometimes you have to follow the person of interest (POI) on foot and go into restaurants, stores, etc. Field Work is more surveillance or knocking on doors and asking questions or interviewing people. Basically everything outside the office.
